Are you looking to straighten your smile? At Advanced Dentistry of Woodland, we are pleased to offer our patients Invisalign® so they can straighten their teeth with confidence. Here, we’ll discuss what Invisalign is, how it works, and how to take care of Invisalign clear aligners.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative to traditional metal braces that uses virtually invisible clear plastic aligners. This means that your teeth are straightened without all the unsightly and uncomfortable metal wires and brackets. The aligners are removable, so you can take them out when you have a special event where you want to look your absolute best, like a family photo, wedding or a job interview. You can also remove them when you eat and when you brush and floss your teeth. This makes it much easier to eat the foods you love and keep your teeth clean as well.

How does Invisalign work?

The Invisalign clear aligners are custom made so that they fit snugly over your teeth. They move your teeth in a slightly different way than the wires and brackets move your teeth with traditional braces. Instead of pulling your teeth into place, they gently push your teeth into the correct position by using slight pressure to realign them. As your teeth straighten, you will swap out the clear aligners every one to two weeks in order to get new aligners that will continue to push your teeth further into place. You’ll need to wear the clear aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day for the aligners to effectively straighten your teeth.

How to take care of Invisalign clear aligners

There are a number of ways you can care for your Invisalign clear aligners. The thing you don’t want to do is use toothpaste to clean them since the slight abrasives can scratch the aligners. Instead, clean your aligners with soap and water by combining a tiny bit of gentle liquid soap and warm water. Use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently scrub, or you can soak them in the solution for 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing them clean. Vinegar and water also make a good cleaning solution for aligners. Simply mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts warm water and soak your aligners in the mixture for 20 minutes. Similarly soaking your aligners in a mixture of 1 teaspoon of baking soda and ½ cup of warm water for one hour can clean off your aligners. Finally, you can also use retainer cleaner–which you can buy over the counter at any drugstore–to clean you clear aligners.
